How Can I Convince My Parents To Let Me Date?

Hey Katie,

My mom won’t let me date, but I sort of want to…

I’m home schooled and she says I can’t date until I am 18 or maybe 17 years old. What is a good way to make a “date” (if I even find one) appropriate? How can I convince my mom to think it’s okay? If I can convince my mom then I can convince my dad. Any tips?

Tamara, 14

Dear Tamara,

Always be open and upfront about what’s going on and you’ll be surprised how much freedom you will have. Saying “Mallory and Em are going to Westroads Mall after practice on Friday to look for a pair of jeans and asked me if I want to go. Emily’s mom is driving. I’d be home no later than 9:30″ will get a whole different reaction than “Can I go to the mall with my friends?” Give them all the information they need and if plans change call them so they can adjust their expectations.

When living in your parents house, unfortunately you have to live by their rules. But I have found that the more open and honest you are with them about everything going on in your life, the more trusting they will be.

And it sounds like you just kinda want to date right now, but it’s not a big issue. Is it that you just want the ability to date if you meet the right guy? Don’t worry about it too much right now. When the time comes and you meet a guy you really like, just be open with your mom and tell her all about him. If she feels like she knows him she will be more trusting when you ask to hang out with him. And as far as the most appropriate sceanero, you should definitely start with group dates, not just one on one with him. Your mom might feel better knowing that you are not alone with a guy.

xoxo
