How To Talk To Your Mom About Your Boyfriend!

Dear Katie,
I have a boyfriend and I like him a lot, but I don’t know how to talk to my mom about him. She knows I have a boyfriend because she saw online, but she doesn’t know him. We’ve never really talked about guys before. Yesterday he asked me if I wanted to go to the movies with him. My best friend and her boyfriend are going too so it’s not like we will be alone. We have been going out for almost four weeks and I really want to go, but I don’t know how to ask my mom. My mom told me she doesn’t want me to be alone with him. That’s the only thing she said about him though. I’m scared of what she will say and I don’t know how to ask or how to bring it up. Please help.

Usually parents feel like they don’t want to seem nosy and interfere in your life so they don’t ask. Your mom is probably very curious about your boyfriend and would love to hear about him. It sounds like it will be OK with your mom if you go to the movies since you are not going alone. I think you are just afraid she will say no.
When you go to talk to her, talk to her like you always do and ask her without feeling like there is something she will disapprove of. If she senses that you are apprehensive about asking her, then she will be suspicious that you are up to something that you shouldn’t be. I think she will say yes since there is really nothing wrong with you wanting to go to the movies with your friends and boyfriend. Good luck sweetie!
