What Is The Most Natural Looking Foundation?
August 19, 2009

Hi Katie,
Lately I have really been into makeup. I start high school next year and I think this summer will be a great time to start acting and looking more mature. It seems like now is my chance to come back to school with the style and look I’ve always wanted. I don’t want to look ‘old’, just more polished and sophisticated. So here’s the problem, my mom won’t let me buy makeup. She won’t let me use foundation or powders. I already have the eyeliners and shadows that I can use, but I want to look like i’m not wearing ANY makeup and by that I really mean no makeup.
I won’t wear eye makeup and blush and gloss and stuff, but I want a foundation to even out my skin and a concealer to cover my blemishes and under eye circles. She is convinced that the foundations will ruin my skin. I already have a solution to that: I will buy really good makeup. I want to buy MAC or Clinique, but she won’t even listen to me! Please tell me how to convince my mom and let me know if you know of a really good quality foundation without a huge price tag.

Dear Evangeline,
The best foundation isn’t always the most expensive one. The key to finding a good foundation is the color! I have actually found that the Clinique foundations all have a pinkish cool tone to them which does not look natural. Most skin tones have more of a yellow warm hue to them and you need to find a foundation that has those qualities.
I found that the liquid foundations from L’Oreal Paris Ideal Balance and True Match foundations have a great colors that look really natural and warm. That is what I use, and I am always getting compliments on my skin! Also when you are choosing a color, if you can’t decide between two, always go with the lighter one of the two. It will blend better and you can always use a bronzer to give it a little color. But if it turns out to be too dark, it will look obvious you are wearing makeup and give your skin and unclean look.
Another trick to making your foundation appear really natural is to use a makeup sponge and apply it lightly. This will help you to blend it really well into your skin to make it look like your natural skin. Also, a tip when using a concealer to cover blemishes or under eye, always use a concealer with a yellowish tone and that is slightly lighter than your foundation. One I like to use is Maybelline New York Corrector Stick in yellow…it works great for most skin colors. Make sure to apply BEFORE you put on your foundation. Concealer always goes on first.
As for your mom, there is really no way you can change her mind. She has her opinions and beliefs about makeup and you can’t change that. You can either suggest using a natural makeup that doesn’t use chemicals (such as bare minerals) or if you apply your makeup light enough to where is still looks natural your mom might not even notice that you are wearing any!
